Touching moss, moving it, feeling it. A way to get close contact with nature, with the forest, with the landscape, to get close. Moss has no roots and grows on rocks and bare soil. It lives between shade and light, wet and dry, hard and soft. Through its tiny, single-celled leaves, it absorbs moisture from rain, dew, and mist. Dries out, sucks in, breathes.
Tactile activities like walking barefoot on wet grass, swimming in a cold lake, or feeling soft moss may help us to understand the non-human world better, to respect it as it should be respected. Awareness of our bodies' material existence in relation to other bodies and their contexts. Through the body, one can learn to know the world. I carry the moss, pat it, shape it, give it and all the organisms it houses, a new place and a new home. Moss was one of the first species to move from water to dry land, moss is our older relative. It stands in constant contact with the earth and all its beings, including us. Through moss, we may be able to touch time. Not human time, the earth's time, Moss Time.
