Strömsholm Wool Factory
Once alive with weaving looms and steaming dye vats – a centre for wool, power and craftsmanship in Hjo.
Strömsholm Wool Factory
Strömsholms Wool Factory (Strömsholms Yllefabrik) was located next to Strömsholmsdammen, the Strömsholm Dam. It is believed that as early as the 1700s, the Alingsås Manufactory operated a wool spinning mill (kamullgarnspinneri) at this very site.
That spinning mill eventually developed into Strömsholms Yllefabrik AB.
The factory stood just below the dam’s edge, partially built out over the river. Along the dam, stretching up toward what is now Strömsdalsvägen, was a long wooden building with a spinning mill on the ground floor and a weaving workshop on the upper floor.
Closer to the river – and partially over it – lay the dyeing house.
Fire and Turbine Power
Around 1916, a water turbine was installed at the dam. It generated electricity for the factory and also supplied some power to nearby households in Hjo.
But in 1922, disaster struck – the factory burned down. It was never rebuilt.
Follow the Nature Trail
The nature reserve is a green oasis in the heart of the town, offering wonderful outdoor experiences all year round. Follow the Nature Trail along the Hjo River, from Hjo Harbour all the way up to the small lake Mullsjön, just west of the town.
This lush and leafy path takes you on a historic walk through wild landscapes, rich in birdlife – right in the middle of Hjo.
You can easily find the trail by following the wooden signs marked “NATURSTIGEN” along the river.
The full walk is approximately 4 km, from Hjo Harbour to Stämmorna at Lake Mullsjön.
